How to get over overwhelm with Power Hour

Updated: Oct 11, 2021

Feeling overwhelmed with lots of niggling things taking up our headspace and energy, robs us of peace and happiness. Even when we are off the clock, it’s possible these things remain in our awareness as something we need to deal with. We may feel disorganised and fearful that we are going to drop the ball on something that will impact our credibility or relationships.

A power hour is a focused 60-minute session to get on top of everything that’s floating around your awareness. Here’s how to do this.

  • Book 60 minutes where you won’t be disturbed.

  • Go to a space that is uncluttered. This might not be your desk. Mine currently needs a good today! Bring a pen, paper and access to your calendar.

  • Do whatever you need to make yourself feel good, bring a coffee, light a candle, have a stretch, play some music, whatever does it for you.

  • Clear your mind and take a deep breath.

  • Get a blank page and divide it into the 4 quadrants of the Eisenhower matrix.

This is a super little tool. It helps you figure out your priorities. Now, start to put all those things that you are floating around in your invisible “need to-do” list in the applicable square of the matrix.

Really figure out what is important/not important and urgent/not urgent. You’ll soon realise that not everything needs to be tackled right away. You may end up with a lot of tasks in the lower two quadrants, and they aren’t your priority items.

Now let's prioritize

  • For everything you’ve come up in Quadrant 1, schedule time in your calendar to ensure you give them the necessary time to move the needle on each one. The move to quadrant 2 and schedule time for these activities so you don’t lose sight of them.

  • For those items in quadrant 3 and 4, determine what you can forget about. If you don’t do it for example, that it won’t have an impact on your goals or results. Is there anything you can outsource or delegate?

  • You now have assessed, prioritized and scheduled everything that was on your mind. Now you can relax and enjoy the confident energy of being organized and on top of your priorities and schedule.

You're welcome!
